Follicular unit transplantation (FUT)
What is follicular unit transplantation?
Follicular unit transplantation has been performed for 25 years. FUT is the removal of hundreds to thousands of follicular units from donor tissue from the mid posterior scalp. Once the strip is removed, our surgical team carefully divides the tissue into individual follicular units. They have performed thousands of procedures for years and are dedicated to creating high-quality follicular units efficiently and with the highest quality.
How is FUT performed?
FUT is performed under local anesthesia and follows the standard technique of skin surgery. The donor tissue removed is from the mid occipital scalp, where the most donor density of hair is available for men and women.
The area to be removed is trimmed to 1 mm while the hair above the donor region is raised above to camouflage the sutures after the procedure. If your is longer than ½ an inch, the sutures will be hidden the day after the process, and the resulting scar will not ever be visible.
What are the benefits of FUT?
FUT appeals to patients that have no intention ever to wear their hair short. These include all women and many men. Why? FUT does create a linear scar as the result of the donor tissue removal, but for patients that never intend to wear their hair short ( less than half an inch on average), the linear scar from FUT is of no practical significance. They can have a transplant without trimming their entire posterior scalp! The transplant can be performed without anyone ever knowing it was done in the donor region - the day after the procedure and twenty years later.
Who should not do FUT?
If a patient wears their hair short enough to see their scalp, they may want to wear their hair short in the future FUE is the preferred donor harvesting method since the pinpoint scars are less visible than a linear scar. Both donor harvesting techniques create equally natural-appearing transplanted hair.
