Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Q & A
What is PRP?
PRP is an innovative treatment that harnesses the body’s healing abilities. PRP involves a blood draw, which is then treated to create a sample dense with platelets. That sample is then re-injected into the body to stimulate healing and growth. Historically, PRP has been used to treat injured tendons, joints, and muscles. It has recently been developed as a cosmetic treatment for hair loss and skin rejuvenation. Dr. Avram has had success in using PRP to treat hair loss in men and women.
What happens during treatment?
When you have PRP, one of the technicians at Dr. Avram’s practice will draw your blood. Your blood is then placed in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the platelet rich plasma. Once the treatment is ready, the PRP is injected into the areas of your scalp showing signs of thinning and hair loss.
You will typically need three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart. You’ll come back to the office for Dr. Avram to examine your scalp and determine how successful your treatments have been. Most patients have follow-up treatments every 6-12 months to maintain the full benefits of the PRP injections. Results may vary from patient to patient.
How will I know if PRP is a good hair loss treatment for me?
Dr. Avram suggests the treatment that he feels will best resolve your hair loss concerns and provide the most effective hair restoration. It’s possible that Dr. Avram will suggest that you combine PRP treatments with additional treatments, such as minoxidil or finasteride. PRP treatments may help to restore thinning or damaged hair follicles, resulting in thicker, healthier hair. Dr. Avram and his team are always available to answer questions about hair loss and the potential treatments including platelet rich plasma.
